Landscape Design Trends in 2022

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more homeowners are taking on home renovation projects. In an article by CNBC, an online home remodeling platform, reports that they’ve experienced a 58 percent in the project leads for home professionals a few months after the pandemic began.

Aside from remodeling projects that involve indoor space such as the kitchen and the bath, people have also shown interest in improving their outdoor space. This is largely due to the collective feeling of isolation and containment that people felt from being stuck inside their homes. Here, we list down some of the design trends that will take over the landscape industry this year.

Pastel tones and dark colors

Pastel tones are making a fiery comeback this year. According to House Beautiful, Pantone included cheerful pastels in its roster of spring/summer 2022 color trends in an effort to promote spontaneity and simplicity. But they’re not coming back empty-handed. To balance the softness of pastel colors such as lilac, periwinkle, and mint green, dark shades such as burgundy, navy, and indigo should be included in the mix. Garden and landscape elements in the aforementioned color scheme will surely bring excitement to today’s outdoor spaces. From different-colored pots and planters to delicately-colored plants such as slipper orchids, crab-apples, and magnolias, gardens this year will surely look more adventurous and stylish.

Outdoor living space

As we’ve mentioned, an increasing number of folks are turning their outdoor spaces into living areas. In fact, a recent trend report from the International Casual Furnishings Association notes that outdoor living spaces are more valuable than ever before. Because of this, outdoor structures such as gazebos and pergolas are gaining in popularity as they are used for a variety of purposes such as outdoor offices, fitness spaces, and entertainment areas. Furthermore, more folks are also transforming their underutilized lawns into livable outdoor areas by installing polished concrete flooring. When decorating outdoor living spaces, homeowners should choose furniture that is made of high-quality materials, are low maintenance, and can save space.

Smart garden technology

A survey by rental property platform Rent reveals that 82 percent of homeowners want at least one smart device in their home. However, smart home tech is not limited to the interior aspects of the home. Because smart home devices elevate the convenience and comfort of homeowners, such technology has also infiltrated the gardening and landscaping industry. Today, you can use smart garden technology to provide water, manage light, control weeds, and monitor the nutrients of the plants in your outdoor spaces. This technology connects compatible devices to a hub (which can be your phone or computer), giving you full control over the technology and allowing you to save energy and other resources.

Elements of sustainability

Sustainability continues to be a driving trend for various industries today. According to a survey by Simon-Kucher & Partners, more and more people are mindfully choosing sustainable products, services, and practices. In landscape design, homeowners and landscapers are looking for ways to incorporate sustainability in the outdoor spaces that they handle. For one, some can choose to exclusively pick plants that don’t require excessive water and can survive periods of drought without trouble. Other sustainable elements that can be seen in many of today’s gardens are solar panels, which Hoymiles notes are a critical part of the modern renewable energy strategy. While the solar panels that can be installed in gardens are too small to fully power a home, the energy they generate can instead be used for powering outdoor appliances. With sustainable landscape design, homeowners can do their part in saving the earth.
